How is ranking calculated, and how do you read the results map in Localo?

🟣 Tracking rankings and keywords

Written by Mariusz Bal

After reading this article, you’ll learn:

  • How Localo calculates your business’s ranking

  • How to interpret the results map and individual points

  • Why the ranking varies depending on location

  • How the average ranking is calculated

  • Why it’s worth analyzing the map rather than just a single number

1 - How does Localo calculate your business's ranking?

Localo checks your business's ranking for a selected keyword at multiple points on the map. Each point corresponds to a specific location: it's as if a user were standing at that location and searching for that keyword on Google Maps.

The number in the circle indicates your business’s ranking among all businesses competing for the same keyword in that location.

  • Example: The Chleby Joanna profile appears only in 16th place for the keyword “bread” in this location, compared to all the business listings of competitors who want to be visible for that phrase:

Remember, your ranking on Localo always depends on the competition; the more businesses there are in a given area, the harder it is to achieve a high ranking.

  • Example: The Chleby Joanna profile ranks 1st out of 106 competitors:

1.1 Why does the ranking vary on the map?

Your visibility may vary depending on the location:

  • in one location, you may be in the Top 3

  • a few streets away, you may be outside the Top 10

That is why the map shows the full picture of your business’s visibility in the analyzed area (a circle with a radius of approx. 23 km), rather than just a single, averaged value.

1.2 How should I interpret the colors and position ranges?

Each point on the map includes a number and a color (shade) that indicate visibility and growth potential.

Rank ranges:

  • 1–3 → very high visibility (Top 3 on Google)

  • 4–10 → good visibility

  • 11–20 → average visibility

  • 20+ → low visibility

The color indicates the difficulty level of improving your ranking:

  • light (easy) → quick results possible

  • medium (moderate) → requires regular effort

  • dark (difficult) → high competition

2 - How is your ranking calculated?

2.1 How does the calculation work?

  1. We check the ranking of each business at all locations marked on the map (for the selected keyword). For each location, we record the position in which the business appears on Google.

  2. We calculate the average position for each business. In other words, we calculate the mathematical average of the business’s position across the entire map.

  3. We compare businesses against each other. We rank businesses from the best average position to the worst.

  4. Your business’s position = its place in this ranking. If your business has the best average → it’s in 1st place. If it has the second-best average → it’s in 2nd place, and so on.

Example:

We have 5 companies and their average positions on the map.

The lower the average, the better the position. Therefore, the ranking looks like this:

Company

Average position

Ranking position

Company

4,0

1

Company

6,3

2

Company

12,2

3

Company

13,4

4

Company

13,9

5

This means that the company with an average of 4.0 is in 1st place, and the company with an average of 12.2 is in 3rd place.

2.2 What does this mean in practice?

A single number (e.g., position 5) is a simplification. In reality, you may rank higher in some areas and lower in others. That is why it is important to analyze the entire map, not just the average.

3 - Why might the rankings change?

Changes are natural and result from:

  • competitors' actions

  • changes in Google's algorithm

  • updates to your profile

  • differences between locations

Additionally, the scope of the analysis may change as your business's visibility grows.

💡 What matters most is the long-term trend, not a single result.

4 - Performance History and Data Updates

Localo lets you track changes in rankings over time.

After each keyword update, you can:

  • compare current results with previous ones

  • check whether your efforts are paying off

  • analyze visibility trends

This allows you to see not only your current status but also how your ranking is improving.
