1 - Automated Translation in Google Meet

Google Meet now offers two main translation features: Translated Captions (text subtitles) and Speech Translation (real-time AI voice dubbing). Here's how to use both.

2 - Method 1: Translated Captions (Text Subtitles)

This is the most widely available option - it shows real-time translated text on screen and supports multiple languages.

Step 2.1 - Join or start your Google Meet

Go to meet.google.com and enter your meeting.

Step 2.2 - enable captions (CC)

Step 2.3 Open Settings

Click the three-dot menu (⋮) at the bottom of the screen →

select Settings.

Step 2.4 Set up the right language

🧑‍💻 Use case: I’m speaking with someone who speaks French and I want to see what they’re saying in the English subtitles.

How do I set this up?

  1. Go to Captions.

  2. Select the language of the person who is speaking (French)

  3. Select the language in which you want to see the captions (English)

3 - Method 2: Real-Time Speech Translation (AI Voice Dubbing)

🗣️ Use case: I want the person I’m talking to to speak in a different language. Like a simultaneous translation.

This is the premium feature - you hear the translation spoken aloud, not just read it.

Who can use it: Google Meet live speech translation is available to individual users on Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscriptions, as well as select Google Workspace business plans.

Step 3.1 - Join your meeting

Step 3.2 - Open more options

Step 3.3 - Find "Speech Translation"

Step 3.4: Choose the suitable combination

🇪🇸 Use case: I speak Spanish and I want what an English-speaking person says to me to be translated into Spanish, my language.

⚠️ Important limitations:

  • Speech translation is currently only available on computers - mobile (Android/iOS) is not yet supported.

  • Google Meet supports only one language pair at a time, so all participants must use the same translation combination during the meeting.
